Roofing Desaturation Testing
Once samples (asphalt or modified bitumen composition shingles; asphalt, coal tar, or modified bitumen built-up roofing; or modified bitumen single-ply membranes) arrive at our laboratory, they are carefully unpackaged and examined. The samples are weighed, measured, and photographed. Photographs include both overviews and close-ups at areas of interest. Samples are scrutinized close up and hand-manipulated for punctures, fractures, bruises, and other anomalies. Next, clear plastic sheets called overlays are positioned over samples and the sample traced, and areas of interest outlined. Samples are desaturated in a vapor degreaser and reinforcements extracted. Reinforcements are examined for fractures or strained regions attributable to impacts. Conditions in reinforcements are compared to observations recorded on overlays. Reinforcements likewise are documented via photographs. A report with descriptions, findings, and photographs is completed by a licensed engineer.
