Licensed Engineer - Senior Civil/Structural

Job Description

Haag Engineering Co. is now accepting resumes for licensed civil/structural engineers for our branch office to be located in the Los Angeles metro area. Applicants must be licensed in the state of California to be considered.

Senior civil/structural engineer will be handling forensic engineering work for clients throughout the United States. The engineer will be expected to evaluate the cause of failure, extent of damage, and options for repair in a variety of construction-related circumstances. Presently, civil/structural engineers occupy much of their time evaluating the cause and extent of damage following storms and natural disasters. While a significant portion of this work is related to structural engineering, proficiency in other civil engineering branches like soils and hydraulics is very helpful. The engineer will need to effectively communicate his or her opinions in writing and verbally, sometimes as courtroom testimony.

Required:

Education and Licenses

  • Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Licensed (by examination) in the state to which the engineer is to be assigned.
  • NCEES registration or has obtained licensing (by passing the P.E. exam) in at least one state and will apply to NCEES within six (6) months of hire date.
  • Must never have been disciplined by an engineering board or licensing authority.

Work Experience

  • Minimum 5 years experience as a licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Project management or supervisory experience desired.
  • Minimum 5 years forensic experience required.

Personal Traits

  • Physically fit and capable of strenuous field work, sometimes at significant heights above ground, if required.
  • Pass pre-employment physical exam.
  • Pass pre-employment and future random drug testing.
  • Resourceful; can accomplish multiple tasks; can handle multiple projects in a timely fashion.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Can work independently and manage own workload.
  • Capable of accepting and reacting positively to constructive feedback.
  • Has a high energy level.
  • Takes pride in his or her work.
  • Resourceful; people person; can handle difficult people or situations.

Communication Skills

  • Must have good verbal communication skills, can speak effectively and explain things simply.
  • Must have excellent writing skills, will be expected to write reports almost daily.

Courtroom

  • Must be capable of providing expert witness testimony by deposition or in the courtroom.
  • Past experience must be able to withstand the engineering and personal ethics scrutiny that accompanies courtroom testimony.

Branch Management Duties

  • Establish current and long-range objectives, plans, budgets and policies for the engineering staff, subject to the approval of the President and the Board of Directors.
  • Supervise the job work of the engineering staff to ensure that all disciplines are properly coordinated and that work products are consistent.
  • Monitor the fiscal responsibility of the engineering staff to ensure that fair and proper items are charged to jobs, that job billings by engineers are kept current, and that write-offs are proper and reasonable.
  • Perform standard technical report review.
  • Ensure that the engineering staff follows company policies and procedures in engineering work and business matters.
  • Handle local client complaints related to engineers and engineering work.
  • Conduct regular, periodic, performance reviews of engineering staff.
  • Take job assignments that will be handled by other engineers, coordinating with other offices if necessary.
  • Discuss potential job assignments with prospective clients.

Marketing and Seminars

  • Market his/her own abilities to clients as well as market Haag's services.
  • Must participate in various company marketing efforts.
  • Must have (or learn) some salesmanship capability.
  • Must learn to teach Haag seminars put on by the Education department.

Office Equipment

  • Must use computers and be:
    • Proficient in MS Word
    • Efficient in MS Excel
    • Efficient in MS PowerPoint

Travel Requirements

  • Air travel will be required on a regular basis.
  • Engineer frequently will travel by personal vehicle to jobsites within driving distance.  Mileage reimbursement paid.
  • Passport required for very occasional overseas travel

Preferred:

  • Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • Knowledge of model building codes and standards.
  • Experience troubleshooting construction problems for remedial action.
  • Experience with the insurance industry.
  • Understand and use personal computers relative to:
  • Computer Aided Drafting (CAD)
  • Hand-held Personal Data Assistants (PDA's)
